La comunidad de Oakland se ha unido en torno a un vendedor de paletas hispano, de 80 años, que fue asaltado a punta de pistola por unos jóvenes el lunes pasado, en medio de una ola de robos que enfrenta la ciudad.
El robo ocurrido el pasado lunes por la tarde fue captado por una cámara de seguridad, cuyas imágenes muestran al hombre empujando su carro de paletas cuando una camioneta se detiene a su lado y dos hombres se bajan y se acercan a él.
Uno de los hombres le apunta con un arma mientras el otro lo registra y le quita sus pertenencias. El vendedor, quien es un migrante que solo habla español, no opuso resistencia.
Tras cometer el robo los hombres se suben al vehículo y se marchan.
La Policía de Oakland ha dicho que investiga el hecho. Por su parte, el concejal Noel Gallo, que representa al distrito donde ocurrió el robo, dijo a la televisora KRON4 que los robos a plena luz del día en la ciudad tienen agobiados a los vecinos. “Ya no respetan a los abuelos y abuelas”, lamentó.
Gallo agregó que la ciudad apoyará a la víctima, identificada por vecinos y activistas como “Don José”.
Al menos dos cuentas en GoFundMe han recaudado en total más de 30 mil dólares hasta hoy para ayudar al migrante.
El próximo sábado se realizará un evento de venta de helados en Oakland para ayudar al vendedor, que según reportes de vecinos ayuda con su trabajo a mantener a un hijo con discapacidad.
